RETIREMENT PLANNING

Retirement means something different to us all.

Let us help you plan for the retirement that you want.

A pension is a long-term investment the fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates, and tax legislation.

Employers and the government look to tell us when and how we should retire, with specific retirement ages and benefits, but in reality we all have differing views of what this period of life should look like.

Legislative changes in 2015 brought in a range of pension freedoms which vastly increased our choices of how and when to retire.

Whilst these freedoms have been welcome, they came with increased complexity and never has planning for our later lives been more vital.

Regardless of where you are on your journey, we can help you plan for the years to come.

Factors we need to consider

WHAT

MORE
  • What pensions do you already have in place?
  • What other assets do you have that could be allocated towards retirement?
  • What level of income will you need throughout retirement?
  • What level of shortfall do you have in your retirement plans?
  • What investment preferences, restrictions or ethical beliefs do you have?

WHEN

MORE
  • When do you plan to retire?
  • When will you need additional income?
  • When will your state pension start?
  • When will you need access to any lump sum amounts in retirement?

HOW

MORE
  • How much more can you afford to allocate towards retirement planning?
  • How flexible can you be on when you retire?
  • How much risk do you feel comfortable or able to take when investing towards retirement?

So how do we approach this journey?

What does retirement look like to you?

The traditional ‘stop work at 65 and draw a regular income for life’ view of retirement still makes sense for some, but the way we view retirement has become far more diverse than that. With annuity rates much lower than they were and with people living longer many of us are looking towards more flexible retirements

Where are you now?
Once we have a good understanding of when and how you would like to retire, we then need to establish your current financial circumstances. Where on your journey are you at this moment in time?
How did you get here?

Once we have plotted where you are now on your retirement journey, it is important for us to understand how you got here and to review your existing planning.  Sometimes your existing planning will contain certain benefits, guarantees or restrictions which can affect how we plan for the remainder of your journey.

How can we get you there?
Could making changes to your existing planning help to get you there, or do we need to put in place some additional planning?  Often it can be a combination of both.  By using our whole of market comparison software packages, we are able to assess your existing plans in detail (with clear projections of benefits to your planned retirement age) and assess the current and potential investment strategies they offer.  Our independence means that whether the advice is to alter your existing plans, or to put in place new plans, we can deliver the advice that is best for you, without restriction.
Setting off on the journey

Once we have analysed your existing plans and your requirements in detail, we will formulate our recommendations, which will be detailed in a clear report to you.  Should you accept our recommendations, we will then implement your plan for you and set you off on your journey.

Service stops
As with most journeys (especially long ones) stopping to check up on things and ‘refuel’ if necessary is important. It is rarely the case that the original journey will not require some adjustment en-route, but with regular reviews and cashflow modelling we can keep you firmly on track and ensure you arrive at your destination on time.
Arriving at retirement

There will come a time where we each arrive at our retirement (however that may look) and it is important that at this stage, all of the planning you have done can start to meet your needs. The range of retirement income options is far more complex than it once was and advice through this period of life can be just as important as during the planning stage before it.  Using the assets you have accumulated to deliver a sufficient and sustainable income, whilst ensuring that you only pay the tax that you need to is key to navigating this next stage of life.

Case Studies

Michela B. – North Yorkshire – February 2021

Michela contacted us as she had various pensions, built up from previous employments. She was unsure of whether these plans would be sufficient for her needs in retirement, whether they or (given her proximity to her retirement retirement age now) were subjecting her retirement funds to a comfortable level of investment risk.

On reviewing Michela’s pension plans, it was evident that they remained cost effective and suitable for her needs, however the investment strategies needed bringing in line with Michela’s agreed risk profile.

We switched Michela into suitable investment funds within her pensions and agreed to continue reviewing the plans on an annual basis.  After we implemented this advice, Michela was kind enough to leave us the following testimonial on the independent review site – www.vouchedfor.co.uk:

“I was considering an early retirement and I wanted to understand if I could afford not working full time.

Graham explained very clearly how my private pensions work, advised the best way forward and outlined the costs involved in taking his advice.

I am very pleased with the service, Graham was very precise, replied timely to my requests and was very patient waiting for my replies. We met in person twice and I look forward to our yearly meeting to assess my pension situation.”

Ken J. – North Yorkshire – January 2023

Ken got in touch with us as he had been made redundant from his job and (like many people) he had several pensions from different previous employments and was not sure what they all meant in terms of his future retirement.  Ken was also keen to review his pension plans, which had not been reviewed for many years, to ensure that they were suitable for his needs and were working well for him.

On reviewing Ken’s pension plans, it was evident that his existing plans were not very cost effective, were not performing particularly well and offered a minimal choice of alternative funds.  Further to this, they did not provide access to flexible income options in retirement, which was an important requirement for Ken.  One plan had even been sat invested in a cash fund for several years, after the previous fund closed down.  As a result, Ken had lost out on a lot of potential growth over those years.

Ken’s plans were all consolidated within a new, cost-effective plan, which provided access to a good range of investment funds, as well as the full range of flexible income options.  His plan was invested in a cost-effective, independently rated investment strategy, in line with his agreed risk profile and we agreed to review Ken’s plan on an annual basis.  After we implemented this advice, Ken was kind enough to leave us the following testimonial on the independent review site – www.vouchedfor.co.uk:

“Having recently been made redundant I made the decision to sort out my pensions and try and formulate a plan for the future. I searched the internet on various websites for a reputable IFA in my area. Graham’s name appeared, and he was also based in my local area. After reading the reviews his customers had posted I decided to take the plunge and give him a call.

Graham was, and still is very helpful. We discussed what my aspirations for the future are, and after reviewing my pensions and talking about the numerous options available to me, what the best way forward would be. The advice he gave me on my pensions will save me money in running costs and should hopefully give me a greater return. Everything has been explained to me throughout the whole process, and I feel I am now more understanding of how and what I am able to expect when I retire. I look forward to accepting many more years of valuable ongoing advice from Graham in the future.

I am very pleased that Graham has now organised all my pensions for me, and they are all together with one provider, that gives me the access I want when I retire, and hopefully the increased return.”
